(1899–1989)
composer and pianist

De Manziarly and Mycielski met when they were studying with Nadia Boulanger. Marcelle became interested in Zygmunt’s oeuvre and he in return dedicated to her Three Songs to words by Petronius. They quickly became friends and Mycielski even contemplated marrying Marcelle. The subject of the potential marriage kept returning for many years, but the two remained friends till the end. They showed interest in each other’s oeuvre and both remained faithful to the principles of Nadia Boulanger’s school. Mycielski would always visit Marcelle during his stays in Paris and she would visit him in Poland. In the late 1970s she moved to Ojai, California, to her sister Mima Porter’s ranch. Mycielski was a guest there on fiveoccasions. In 1978, during his first visit there, he composed in Ojai Six Songs for orchestra, which he dedicated to Marcelle de Manziarly.
