Zofia Lissa
(1908–1980)
musicologist

Leading Polish musicologist of the post-war era. She was the person who in 1948 introduced musicologists into the Polish Composers’ Union, having negotiated the conditions with Zygmunt Mycielski (secretary general and then president of the Union). Ideologically, they were worlds apart, but Mycielski appreciated Lissa’s knowledge and intellect. In December 1961 he wrote to her, sending her New Year’s wishes:

Zocha – best wishes. May God have us in His most holy care in 1962, because we’ve had enough of this human bastardry. We probably need to return to the old bearded God, that’s more certain!” (letter in the collection of the Zygmunt Mycielski Society in Wiśniowa)
