I saw this during, for example, my only personal encounter with him – through Stanisław Kołodziejczyk, who introduced me to Mycielski, when we met one day in Nowy Świat in Warsaw. And I can say that this was not a gentleman who would immediately start a conversation with a person to whom he had just been introduced.
He was never widely known – he remained largely an outsider and although he was recognisable, it was, in fact, within quite an elite circle. Essentially, he was a character. A man with broad interests. What contributed to his stature was honesty and internal integrity despite their complications. Zygmunt Mycielski knew how to carry his weaknesses with dignity and wrote honestly about them, without hiding anything.
